Thursday and Friday December 17/18

Today in Honors and Regular:
We took the Stoichiometry Test and did the silver test tube lab. In honors we turned in our lab notebooks. And corrected any assignments that were not already corrected.

Today in AP:
Corrected the midterm test. Finished the percent composition of a penny lab and did the silver test tube lab.

Tuesday and Wednesday December 15/16

Today in all honors and regular classes we took the Alien Periodic Table test.

Wednesday and Thursday December 9

Today all classes did the Alchemist Gold lab and the Activity Series of Metals. We corrected the Stoichiometry review in honors and regular and recieved an new review with activity series of metal on it.

AP also did the % composition of a penny lab.

All families finished presenting today.

Chem Club performed chemistry carols at the faculty talent show. GREAT JOB! We helped earn over $1000 for Sub for Santa!

Tuesday, December 8

In all classes today we did the Halide Lab. We presented the Alkali, Alkali Earth, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Chalcogen, Halogen and Noble Gas Families.

In AP we also learned about rates of reaction and had a small lecture on how to use our calculators to get rates and rate constants. Today we corrected 2.6 and 2.7 assignments on our own. We finished the freezing point depression lab printed the graphs and handed them to Mrs. Howell. We had a lecture on rates of reaction, chapter 15. Assignment 2.8 assigned page 712 #1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17
In Honors we got a review of stoichiometry worksheet. We also corrrected Stoichiometry B worksheet.

There was also a rehearsal after school with chem club for the sub for Santa talent show.

Parent Teacher Conferences were today 3:15- 7 pm.

We took some notes on bonding and did a bonding lab. We also did a freezing point depression lab that we will finish next time. YUM! Assignment for tonight 2.7 pg 650 #35, 37, 41, 43, 44, 45, 46, 49, 53, 63, 70, 91 Assignment 2.6 and 2.7 will be corrected next time.

3, 4 - honors
We corrected worksheets and took a quiz. We took notes on molecular geometry and did a lab on molecular geometry. We got a stoichiometry worksheet for homework.

1st - AP
Today we took a stoichiometry limiting reagent quiz. We went through the information in chapter 14. Remember that the old book has a lot of good information on this chapter in chapter 10. We got an assignment to write up a lab procedurre to be used next time in lab to identify the types of bonds in 10 unknown chemcials using, sight, d-water, oil, heat, conductivity. You will have only 15 minutes in lab next time to complete it. We also signed up for the appplication (extra credit) part of a lab on freezing point depression. Yum! We had a book assignmnet 2.6 Pg. 648 #1, 3, 13, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 31, 33.

3rd and 4th -Honors
Today we took a quiz on stoichiometry. We took notes on bond types. Then we talked with our lab partner and decided on a procedure to determine 10 different chemicals bond types. Then we did the lab. The purpose was to find out and describe why we chose the bond types for each chemical that we did. This will be lab 2.5 called Bonding in our lab notebook. We received a new worksheet for tonight , and we will correct the packet of worksheets next time.

AP Chemistry put on Demo Days for us. We go to see many different types of reactions. We filled out a paper with 27 of these reactions names, types, and balanced equations and handed it in. Remember your packets of stoichiometry are due when you come back from Thanksgiving break! Enjoy Thnaksgiving!

B-day

5th - Honors Chemistry We corrected the worksheet from last time and worked in class on our lab notebooks which were handed in at the end of class. We also received a worksheet packet Stoichiometry II. this packet is due the day we get back from Thanksgiving break.

6th and 7th Regular Chemistry
We corrected the worksheet Stoichiometry Problems, and book work pg 2626 #37, 38, 39 and then received a new worksheet 2.6 stoichiometry. We performed the lab Cation and Anion.

8th AP Chemistry - We practiced our Demonstrations for next week and corrected assignment 2.4

Honors Chemistry 5th
Today we took a quiz and corrected two worksheets. We did two labs: The decomposition of Baking soda and the Water Treatment Plant. Lab notebook is due next time. There is no test next time, however there will be longer quizzes this next month to make up for that fact. Another worksheet on Stoichiometry was handed out.

Regular Chemistry 6th and 7th
Today we took a quiz and corrected a 4.4 worksheet and book work (#37, 38, 39 - 6th period will correct this next time). We did two labs: The decomposition of Baking soda and the Water Treatment Plant. Lab notebook is due next time. There is no test next time, however there will be longer quizzes this next month to make up for that fact. Another worksheet on Stoichiometry was handed out. Book work is suspended until assigned in class.

AP Chemistry 8th
Today we took a quiz and then corrected assign 2.4. We did a heat curve problem and then we went through chapter #13. Assign 2.5 is pg 611 # 7, 11, 14, 19, 21-25, 27

Monday November 16

AP chemistry -
We corrected and turned in assign 2.4. We took a quiz on stoichiometry. We talked about a redox reaction in 1980 equations. We learned about chapter #13. We did a heat curve problem together. It was suggested that you look at power points chapter 9 and 10.

Honors Chemistry -
We had an equations quiz where we wrote the products and balanced and named the type. We corrected the worksheet 4.4 from last time. We did the labs Decomposition of Baking Soda and Water Treatment Plant. We do not have a test next time. However, plan on the next couple quizzes being longer and without notes to make up the points of the test. Lab notebooks are due next time! A worksheet called Chemistry Stocihiometry - Problen sheet is the homework for tonight.

6th Regular Chemistry

7th Regular Chemistry

8th AP Chemistry
We went over questions on 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and then corrected them. We then recieved information about chapter #12. We went over all the chapter. 2.4 assingment is pg 581 # 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 23 We talked about Demo Days 23 and 24th and the Science Night Out with Science the 23 from 6-8 pm. We will be trying out our demonstrations on Wednesday during class be prepared! If you have a zerox box with a lid bring it! We are going to try and get organized. The assignments will not be correct on the calendar until I get it updated.

1st AP Chemistry
Today we went over and corrected assignments 2.2 and 2.3. We took notes on cahpter 12 in the book and learned about heating curves and delta H enthalpy and intermolceular forces.

3rd and 4th period Honors Chemistry
To day we had a quiz on empirical formulas. We corrected the worksheet balancing equations. We took notes on Stochiometry on the Stoichiometry worksheet and were assignmed the worksheet Stoichiometry 4.4. We were given the labs 2.3 Thermal decomposition of Baking soda and 2.4 Waste water treatment to get into our notebooks for next time. We performed the lab 2.2 Cations and anions.

Wednesday November 11

5th Honors Chemistry -
We did the second part of the precipitation lab and then worked on the worksheet Balancing Equations. No Book Work. We got the Cation and Anion lab to get set up in our lab notebooks.

6th and 7th Regular Chemistry -
We did the Sweet Sixteen Tournament with our lab partners. Then we worked on the first part of the precipitation lab and doing our predictions so we can do the lab next time and compare our results with what we predicted. We also did parts 1 and 2 of the Cation Anion Lab that we are going to do next time.

8th AP Chemistry -
Today we performed 2 gas law labs: 2.2 Molar Volume of a Gas and 2.3 Unknown Gas. Tai and Jesh were our instructors. We corrected 2.1, 2.2 assignments. Assign 2.3 was assigned. Pg 550 #80, 87, 88. 93. 94. 98. 100.

All Chemistry Classes - Nov 9-10 Monday and Tuesday

We went to the library and researched our periodic families and worked on power points and newsletters with information gained through books, databases, and online. This is the only time that you will be able to use class time to research if you didn't finish your project with your partner today...you will need to do so on your own time. They will be presented in December. Make sure to check your calendar and see what day you are presenting.

Regular - You have book work and a worksheet due next time.
Honors - You have due next time.
AP - = Please start working on getting things ready for your demo.
A-day = We also did a final weighing on the lighter from the lab last time. You have no assigned homework tonight...however we will correct 2.2 and 2.3 next time and you need to finish your labs.
B-day = We will correct 2.1 - 2.3 next time. We went over more problems at the end of class. Please make sure that you are ready to do the two gas labs when you come on Wednesday.

Honors Chemistry Friday November 6

Today in class we did part 2 of the Precipitation lab. We also recieved a lab called Cation and Anions, we will hopefully be doing this next week. We received the worksheet intitled "Balancing Equations". We were given our term project assignments in families. We will research them next time.

Regular Chemistry Thrusday November 5

In class we corrected Voyage through Equations. Then we worked on another worksheet called Six Types of Chemical Reactions and the book work assignment pg 211 #9-12.

Please make sure that you check the chapter (hint a few pages before) to answer the questions about equations.

Honors Chemistry Thursday Novemver 5

We corrected the Voyage through equations. We had a quick 2 question quiz on moles. We did an activity called "Sweet Sixteen". We worked on part 1 of the Preciptiation Lab. This was the homework if not finished in class.

In class today we corrected Voyage Through Equation. We had a quiz worth 9 points on naming and finding moles. We did an activity called "Sweet Sixteen". We worked on Part 1 of the Precipitation Lab. Finishing Part 1 was the homewrok.

The term project was given. Everyone was assigned a periodic family to research and create a newspaper ( study guide) and a power point presentation for their family. Wedding of Li and F was disscussed.

We performed 2.3 The Unknown Gas lab and 2.4 The molar volume of a gas lab. Assign 2.2 needs to be corrected and turned in on your own time. Assignment 2.3 was given: Pg 550 #80, 87, 88, 93, 94, 98, 100

If you didn't finish these labs will be able to be set up again before or after school till next Wednesday. Assign 2.2 was given. Do not do the last three probelems on the calendar. This assignment is correct. pg 547 # 28, 30, 32, 34, 38, 42, 44, 48, 52

AP Chemistry Tuesday Nov 3

Today we went through Kinetic theory and the Gas Laws in chapter #11. The power point that we used is up on my web site under AP power points chapter 11 gas laws. A calendar was given that is to be used as a guideline for the next two months.

Everyone was reminded of their need to be at the Family Night out With Science on November 23, Monday from 6-8 pm. I'll supply BBQ,you bring pot luck to share for dinner that night. We need to set up before. Westminister Chem Club is coming to help us.

Two labs were given. These need to be read over and put in your lab notebook for next time. We will do them. There will be a pre lab quiz on the material in the labs!

Homework Assignment: 2.1 pg 546 #6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 18, 22, 24 to be corrected next time.

Regular Chemistry Tuesday November 3

We started our Voyage through Equations (workshee- due next time) in Chapter #8. We took a quiz at the beginning of class on the different feilds of chemistry and chemical and physical change. Any part of the Voyage through equations that was not finished in class was homework. We will correct this next time.

Honors Chemistry Monday Nov 2

Today we took a quiz on the types of chemistry and chemical and physical change. When then started learning about the types of equations: synthesis(combination), decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, combustion, and acid/base neutralization. If you missed class you will need to read up on these. We also worked on a worksheet that is called "Voyage Through Equations". This is a 2 page both sides worksheet. It has three sections. In section one you are asked to identify the types of the reactions. In section two you are asked to balance the equations. In section 3 you identify the types of reactions, write the products, and then balance the reaction. As a class we did some of each section together. Then the rest was given as homework to be completed and ready for next time to correct.

A calendar for December and November was handed out. It is correct as of today...but it is only to be used as a guide. This blog will let you know exactly what we did in class each day.

There will be a pre-lab next time. Please bring your lab notebook and be prepared to enter 2.1 Precipitation Reactions lab.

We will choose new seats next time in preparation for the second term project. You will have this lab partner till January. Choose wisely! Be on time!

AP chemistry Monday Nov 2

Today a quiz on temperature and density. We discussed equation a on the 1980 exam with possible questions. Two gas labs were handed out; one on Graham's Law and one on Boyles, Charles, and Gay-Lussac's. They are to be put in your lab notebook by next time. Also passed out were a calendar for November and December with homework assignments on it. This can be accessed online through my web site. The home work assignment for tonight is Pg 546 #6,8,10,12,16,18,22,24. We went through the power point on Gas laws and Kinetic Energy that is on the web site under chapter 11. I also stated that you need to start gathering the equipment and things that you need for you demo's. Make sure that you have the 23rd off work from 6-8 pm as we will be performing them for the public that night.

Second term has begun

Hi everyone.
To try and keep us all on the same page. I am going to try and put up each day what we did in class. Second term gets a bit crazy and I don't want anyone falling behind...so keep watching here and the calendar. The calendars will have what I plan on doing each day and on this blog I will put what actually go accomplished. Here we go!
