About the Exam:
Topics covered include atomic structure, intermolecular forces (IMF's), bonding, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium. These are all included in 6 big ideas which encompass core scientific principles, theories, and processes. Laboratory investigations are also a major focus of the course with 25% of the class devoted to lab work. with a minimum of 16 hands-on labs.
The AP Chemistry Exam format is:
Section I: Multiple-Choice Questions (90 minutes, 50% of final grade)-60 multiple choice question
Section II: Seven Free-Response Questions (105 minutes, 50% of final grade)
-3 long-answer questions
-4 short-answer questions
Free-Response Skills Assessed:
1. Experimental design
2. Quantitative/qualitative translation
3. Analysis of authentic lab data and observations to identify patterns or explain phenomena
4. Creating or analyzing atomic and molecular views to explain observations
5. Following a logical/analytical pathway to solve a problem
A periodic table of the elements is provided as well as a formula and constants chart. These may be used on the entire exam. A scientific calculator may be used for the free-response section only.
